Wings of Golden Thread

Remarkable courage combined with a passion for flying. Remembering the aviatrixes of the Air Transport Auxiliary.

“The truth is they were always the better than us. They turned up at whatever airfield they were sent to and flew whatever aircraft they were assigned to. Can you imagine doing that now? If they were trained to fly one type of twin engine bomber it was assumed they could fly any type of twin engine bomber. The same with single propeller jobs. If you knew how to fly a Hurricane it was assumed you knew how to fly a Spitfire. So, yes, they were better than the men. And a lot of the time I thought they had more guts than we did.”
